In this video we will be having a closer look at an old induction motor or asynchronous motor that I got lying around. In order to see whether it still works, I will show you exactly how to power such a motor and how it creates its rotational movement. Along the way you will also learn why such motor types are still the most widely used ones in the world and I will also partly compare them to DC, BLDC and stepper motors. Let's get started!

  • Hey but you did not mentioned about the fourth wire. Why? So you say that its enough to wire up three phases thats all? In all youtube, Im searching info, but noone told or showed how to connect a motor. If in my wall socket is phase and 0. So what the thing is 0???? Common point of star or the cage? I'm starting to build generator from induction motor by putting magnets on rotor. Okay star configuration, three phases and? What connect then common point or cage? As a generator. Can you please explane if you know?

  • Excellent video as usual, could you do one about soft starters and stop methods for a single phase induction motor ? i have noticed that a "soft stop" feature it's not easy to find on comercial soft starters for 1HP motors and i wanted to use one in my pump so it stops banging the pipes when it turns off.

  • Man, I wish we had 3 phase power here in the USA. We just have split single phase.(120, 240 volt, 60 Hz) Three phase is SOOO much more efficient for driving motors, especially larger compressor motors. Both for air conditioning, and for compressed air. We do have 3 phase power in commercial buildings, usually, 120, 208 volts in smaller buildings, and 277, 480 volts in larger buildings. Because we use 60 Hz instead of 50 Hz, those voltages are just right for your 230/400 volt motors. They just run 20% faster, but use the same current, and produce the same torque.

  • (Before watching the video) Of corse the motor will work. It‘s an induction motor, this things don‘t get broken or wear out. They just don‘t. If something breaks it‘s the gears attached to it or the built in bearings. But that‘s easy to fix.

  • Did you know ... ? That you can operate a asynchronous motor in a semi-star configuration with the Steinmetz wiring? Here's how it goes down: - You need the correct capacitor ( 450V~ ): Capacity ( µF ) = Motor power rating ( Watts ) x Factor 0.07! -- ! ! !Don't use starting capacitors ! ! ! -- - You need to hook two bridges and the capacitor as follows: "U1--| |--V1", "W1----V2", "W2----U2". - Hot phase goes to U1 and Neutral goes to W1. If everything is right, then you should have around 325V~ across the capacitor terminals which indicates that your motor is running smoothly and clockwise. Background: You're using two pole pairs combined as one main winding and the solitary pole pair with the capacitor as the auxiliary winding. That way, you rewire an originally designed triple-phase motor as a single phase AC motor. Of course, you don't exploit the full power output, but in areas where triple phase is unavailable, this method just works fine.

  • When you make your electric car series would love to see you design something like the 1239E but supply 220+ volts. Then you can use this type of motor to drive your car. I have 2 large 3 phase induction motors in NJ/USA. You want one you can have it. Not sure how to get it to Germany real heavy. cdn.curtisinstruments.com/products/datasheets/1239E_datasheet_en.pdf

  • Btw huge PMDC motors are very hard to fabricate.therefore all bigger industrial motors are induction motor.one the other way operated at high voltage inductive load consumes reactive power hence causing voltage drop and much poor power factor.this problem can be solved by running motor in over excited state way which act like as capacitor bank to improve the power factor.

  • Well, the "easy" installation of this motor type, requires an overcurrent protection. This has to be installed and set according to the motor description of the motor plate, to ensure you don't burn the motor wires due to overload, loose wire, wrong installation(delta VS star) or any other fault that might happen over time. The temperature/overcurrent protection makes it a little less easy to install. Also, there is a lot more interesting stuff going on with the current, now that we start playing around with ac and a coil. The total amount of current drawn from this motor, can be lowered with the use of a condensator. You should bring out the oscilloscope and look at how the current tracks behind the voltage and how the current can change with an added capacitor. A cool experiment.

In a not so quiet environment though as what we do: grinding and sawing metal is by itself a very loud buisness. Everything we do is not deafening loud though so that most of our machines by themelf like the drill press are not very loud is a good thing and also . these things last forever. The drill press is from around the 60s i think and stll runs as new. Thats reliability!
