In this episode of HACKED! we will be having a look at an asynchronous induction motor and find out whether we can use it as a generator. While doing so we will learn about what makes a generator special and how we can convert an induction motor into one. Let's get started!

  • From my experience you just cannot put any even number of magnets. U need correct number of poles to make it work.

  • You read the documentation wrong. And induction motor needs 4 alternating magnets, not 8., For IT to generate a single rotating field with and odd number stator coils.

  • You tried to make it as a synchronous generator, but the specification changes, so the no, of poles should had been more for less speed, and you had to change the connection of the field winding too, for which now, would be called armature winding

  • you are very wrong i glued magnets after grinding off enough space to do so on a 3 phase and can light a old style bulb by using only two fingers to turn it slowly you have done somthing wrong

Use 20k rpm dc motor huck it up to a wash pashine pump use that thimg as a generator use capacitors to store energy preferably non polarised ore not use capacitors and rather use a hv transformer with pump combination there you go 100 lightbulbs lit up with out trobel just simpel ac/dc magneto wuld do the same thing 😒 there that shuld work besides dont use diodes ore led's best wuld work gas filed bulbs they operate any way at high frequencis

  • For a much better operations: a) the number of pole pairs of the stator should match the number of pole pairs of the rotor b) the magnets need to be stuck to iron on the inside of the rotor, so that the magnetic circuit has much less reluctance, meaning more magnetic field c) the air gap should be reduced as much as possible I think a and b together will already make the generator much more powerful.

  • The bicycle gives only about 100 rpm and I looked at a car generator graph and it needs about 2000 rpm to reach 12v. The hand crank generator needs a wheel to turn against the bike tire side wall.

  • Hello! I am a big fan of your projects! I would like to add some things. An induction motor cannot generate its own voltage and it needs to be connected to the grid and to operate in negative slip in order to produce real power. Even if it is connected to the grid it needs to consume reactive power or else its voltage will collapse. You basically created a synchronous generator after adding the magnets. In this case the number of poles of the stator needs to be the same with the no of poles of the rotor. Also, maybe you need stronger magnets and smaller gap between the stator and the rotor and most importantly dont forget that the motor was designed for 50hz grid. Anyway, I love your experiments! Keep going! 🙂

  • if it doesnt put out any power the magnets are to weak or the poles are the wrong numbers. motors like these are either two pole or four pole. the paralell configuration of wiring can cause the emf to be short circuit. the best way to use it is by the high voltage configuration. i had very weak magnets on a 1 kw 3 phase unit and it did put out more that 20 watts. if you arange to many poles in that thing it will cause reverse voltage in the windings and produce little if no power.

  • Hallback works better. Or skip all the nonsense and use a stepper motor with bridge rectifiers. Steppers are incredibly efficient. WARNING, never open and disassemble a stepper motor, the torque will be drastically less when you try to use it again.

  • Hi GreatScott, can you try using just two sets of magnets, one north pole and one south pole i.e. a 2 pole rotor. If it is indeed a 2 pole induction generator then shouldn't the rotor be also two pole. Please correct me if I am incorrect.

  • A comment off the cuff, it appears that the magnetic relationship between rotor and stator coils dont line up for proper induction. The angle between 2 adjacent magnets on the rotor is less than the angle covered by the stator coil pole, preventing a flux flow through the stator coil. A drawing of the magnetic paths by the rotor in the stator will clarify this point

  • The ideal way would be to make a new shaft with a lathe and then mill the grooves in the rotor with a mill and a divisor for gear milling. Machining is better than 3d plastic printing.

  • Dude, you're turning an induction generator into synchronous generator, great job 👍 How about making the shaft of the induction motor spins faster than its rated rpm, and connects its terminal in parallel with a capacitor in order to produce the voltage that you want. That would be great if you make a video this way. You're amazing 👍

  • Actually the whole idea was marvelous. The bike chain and sproket gear just needed to be a specific size. You find this by multiplying your peddle gear quantity by the rear wheel gear cassette quantity in your case 3x8 ( think) Then you can simply search for a (3x8=) 24 gear chain. And gear.

  • The mistake was the armature size. Magnetic fields decrease at 1/distance squared. you need the magnets a LOT closer to the stator...like less than 1mm. Make another armature and close that gap between the magnets and the stator as much as possible.

  • Hi Scott, any Induction motor can work as a generator. It only needs to be fed with reactive power ( via capacitors while running isolated). You may need to modify some winding connections though and no, grid is not required.

  • you damaged the motor if you hook up asinkronous motor with paralel capasitors you wil get the voltage with the rpm the holl power of the motor capasitors should be in the range of compansation rate of the motor calculated with power factor cosine and the rpm have to bee the total rpm plus the difference 8 if it is ritten on the motor 2850 it is a motor off 3000 rpm the difference is 3000-2850= 150 the desired rpm should be 3150 rpm for full charge ) you damaegd the motor unnesecerily

  • Well useless an induction motor that create barely 4V,i suggest you to connect all the winding in series to create only 1 winding ,connect a capacitor ,connect 1 pole to the generated electricity by the rotor and one pole connected to the stator so that you feed constant electricity to the stator through the electricity generated by the rotor while spinning?. Obviously leaving the the rotor intact the original stator that came with the motor!!! . Well on the topic you could actually even connect a battery to the stator both poles,but at the same time you should have a battery charger connected to the output which is the rotor. I should state that i haven't tested this theory yet,but i will today test it with a slightly bigger motor than the one you use in the video...
